Abstract

This study aimed to explain the role of emotional self-disclosure in enhancing intimacy, satisfaction, and stability in marital relationships. This qualitative review study employed thematic analysis of the relevant literature. Following a systematic search of scientific databases and application of inclusion criteria, 14 eligible articles were selected and analyzed using NVivo software version 14. Data were coded through open, axial, and selective coding procedures, and analysis continued until theoretical saturation was achieved. Results indicated that emotional self-disclosure operates at three interrelated levels: psychological, relational, and contextual. Psychologically, it promotes emotional regulation, psychological security, and individual well-being; relationally, it enhances intimacy, trust, constructive conflict resolution, and marital commitment; and contextually, it is shaped by attachment style, communication skills, family emotional climate, and cultural beliefs. Together, these dimensions play a central role in strengthening marital bonds. Emotional self-disclosure is a fundamental mechanism for marital health and relationship stability, and its development should be considered a core target of couple therapy and family-focused interventions.
