Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a marital quality of life-based therapeutic package and mindfulness therapy on marital adjustment in married women with breast cancer. This quantitative quasi-experimental study used a pretest, posttest, and follow-up design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of married women with breast cancer who referred to treatment centers in Babol and had been diagnosed at least one year before participation. Sixty eligible women were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to three groups of 20 participants: the marital quality of life-based therapeutic package group, the mindfulness therapy group, and the control group. The first experimental group received an 11-session therapeutic package, the second experimental group received eight sessions of mindfulness therapy, and the control group received no intervention during the study period. Data were collected using Spanier’s Dyadic Adjustment Scale and analyzed using mixed repeated-measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni post-hoc tests in SPSS version 22. The mixed repeated-measures analysis showed significant main effects of group and time and a significant group-by-time interaction for total marital adjustment (F=68.78, p<0.001, η²=0.71; F=142.15, p<0.001, η²=0.71; F=38.17, p<0.001, η²=0.57). The group-by-time interaction was also significant for the components of adjustment, cohesion, consensus, and affectional expression. Bonferroni results indicated significant differences between pretest and posttest and between pretest and follow-up in both experimental groups, whereas posttest-follow-up differences were not significant. The magnitude of improvement was greater in the therapeutic package group than in the mindfulness therapy group. Both interventions significantly and sustainably improved marital adjustment in married women with breast cancer; however, the marital quality of life-based therapeutic package was more effective than mindfulness therapy.
